Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom, an original VR game based on the extremely famous British drama series of the same name, was released today by VR developer Maze Theory (Doctor Who: The Edge of Time). In this stunning “gangster drama,” you’ll interact with show characters as you try to gain the confidence of the Shelby family in order to join the iconic crime syndicate. Along the journey, you’ll see classic show locales including Garrison Pub and Shelby’s Betting Shop.
FACTS
According to Maze Theory, The King’s Ransom will feature AI-powered characters capable of delivering “reactive and believable” performances. The game features voice acting from some of the stars of the show, including Cillian Murphy and Paul Anderson as well as original cast members.
Most interesting of all, however, is the decision-based gameplay. As you explore the criminal underworld, you’ll occasionally face “extreme moral decisions” which will affect how characters perceive you.
POINTS REGARDING THE VR
“For the first time, fans will have access to believable and responsive characters from Peaky Blinders, coming face-to-face with Tommy Shelby and encountering first-hand some terrifying situations. It’s an intense and thrilling experience,” said Maze Theory CEO Ian Hambleton in an official release. “We’re very excited to be giving fans and VR enthusiasts access to the Peaky Blinders’ world, transporting them back to 1920s Birmingham and putting them in iconic locations such as The Garrison and Charlie’s Yard.”
“Maze Theory has brought the world of Peaky Blinders to life in an entirely new way. Now you have the chance to walk the streets of Small Heath alongside the Shelby family. I can’t wait for the fans to experience this,” added Jamie Glazebrook, Executive Producer of Season 1 – 6 Peaky Blinders and Caryn Mandabach Productions.
ACCORDING TO REPORTS
Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom is the first VR game inspired by the award-winning gangster drama starring Cillian Murphy as gang leader Tommy Shelby. Set in the lawless streets of 1920s Birmingham, life in the world of the Peaky Blinders is full of opportunity – and risk.
Peaky Blinders fans will meet infamous criminal leader Tommy Shelby (voiced by Cillian Murphy) and his hot-headed sibling Arthur when The King’s Ransom releases on the Quest Platform (voiced by Paul Anderson). How far will you go to win your spot in this vicious back-street gang, with your loyalties, reputations, and lives on the line? Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom, like the program it’s based on, promises to be a darkly fascinating and emotional experience.
POINTS REGARDING AI
We also know from the developer’s past announcements that the game will utilize a new AI system designed to react to player actions. So an NPC might treat you differently based on how you behave around them, for example. It’s certainly an interesting idea that we’ll be looking forward to digging into.
CONCLUSION
Currently, there’s no confirmed release date or window for the game. Maze Theory’s last game, Dr. Who: The Edge of Time, did make its way to Quest, PSVR, and PC VR, though, so hopefully, we’ll see it on those platforms.
Although it’s nice to hear Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom is on its way, there is still no confirmation regarding supported headsets. You can also learn more about the technology behind the video game Maze Theory’s plans for the future in gmw3’s interview with Hambleton.
No word yet on a price or release window, though Meta has confirmed the game will be available on the Quest platform later this year. For more information visit the official website.
